System compatibility

1000BASE-X is widely supported on Extreme Networks switches, including 210/220 series access switches, BlackDiamond 8800 chassis line cards. Compatible with industry standard SFP transceivers of SX, LX, EX, ZX types. It works for point-to-point fiber uplink between access and aggregation layer.

Function

1000BASE-X is the physical standard for gigabit Ethernet over optical fiber and short twinax copper cable. It uses 8B/10B encoding originally derived from fibre channel to realize stable 1Gbps point-to-point transmission. Different optical modules provide different transmission distances for multi-mode or single-mode fiber. It is commonly used for long-distance fiber uplink in campus, factory and branch networks.

Installation

Insert the matched 1000BASE-X SFP transceiver into switch SFP slot. Connect fiber or twinax cable. Verify module recognition and link status via ExtremeXOS CLI. Configure port speed and negotiation parameters as required. Maintain proper fiber bending radius.
