Module Feature

9L11XGB015 is GE metal oxide surge arrester for medium voltage power distribution system. It adopts non-linear zinc oxide varistor core without series gap design. It can absorb lightning impulse surge and system switching overvoltage energy rapidly, limiting overvoltage amplitude to protect transformers, switchgears and other substation equipment from insulation breakdown. Silicone rubber housing design provides excellent pollution resistance and hydrophobic performance, suitable for outdoor substation and overhead line pole mounting. This model has been phased out by GE. Widely used in distribution substation, overhead transmission line lightning protection.

Working principle

Under normal system operating voltage, the zinc oxide resistor maintains high impedance state, only tiny leakage current flows through arrester. When lightning surge or switching overvoltage invades, resistor impedance drops sharply and forms low resistance discharge channel, releasing surge energy to ground. After surge disappears, arrester recovers high impedance automatically, blocking power frequency follow current.

InstallationFollow lockout-tagout safety procedure before operation. Mount GE 9L11XGB015 arrester on metal bracket or crossarm. Connect high voltage terminal to phase conductor and bottom terminal to reliable grounding grid. Torque connection fittings properly, inspect insulation clearance before energizing.

InterfaceHigh voltage top terminal, ground bottom terminal.

DiagnosticPersistent high leakage current: internal varistor aging or dampness. Housing surface tracking/crack: insulation degradation, arrester needs replacement. Frequent surge counter action: heavy lightning activity nearby.
