ABB REF620 Feeder Protection and Control IED Unit

Module Feature

REF620 is the feeder protection and control IED in ABB Relion 620 family.

It is widely used for overhead line and cable feeder protection in industrial and utility medium voltage switchgear. It supports multiple protection functions including overcurrent, earth fault, directional fault, arc flash protection and distributed generation interconnection protection. It has built-in metering, event recording, disturbance recording and fault location. The pluggable design enables fast replacement without rewiring. Local HMI supports mimic diagram display and parameter modification. Multiple communication protocols are available for connecting to SCADA and substation automation system. Widely stocked as maintenance spare for power plant, chemical plant and power grid substation.

Working principle

The IED collects current and voltage signals from CT and PT continuously.

Internal firmware executes protection algorithm according to configured setting groups. When fault occurs, the relay sends trip command to circuit breaker control circuit and records fault value, timestamp and waveform. It exchanges interlock signal via GOOSE for fast busbar and feeder logic coordination. Real-time electrical data and alarm information are uploaded to upper system through Ethernet or serial port.

Onboard components

Signal acquisition module, main processor unit, disturbance recording memory, local HMI display and keypad, status LED array, binary input and output circuit, communication interface module, plug-in backplane connector and flame retardant housing.

LED indicators

Front panel LEDs indicate power, run, alarm and trip status. Local screen displays measurement value, setting groups, fault records and single line diagram.

Hardware self‑diagnosis

Internal supervision circuit monitors power supply, signal circuit, memory and communication channel. Configuration and commissioning are completed by ABB PCM600 software.

Programming software

PCM600, used for protection setting, logic configuration, communication parameter setup, disturbance record download and relay testing.

Installation

Cut off CT and auxiliary control power before replacement.

Insert IED into the base, lock the retention mechanism, wire CT, PT, binary I/O and communication cable, download protection settings, test breaker control and protection tripping function after commissioning.

Interface

CT/PT analog signal terminals, binary input/output terminals, Ethernet communication port, serial communication terminal, test port.

Diagnostic

Overcurrent trip: Downstream overload or short circuit fault. Earth fault alarm: Unbalanced earth leakage current. Communication offline: Network cable damage, IP address conflict. IED fault alarm: Internal hardware failure or power anomaly.
