Woodward VIC414-22 Engine Speed Governor Unit

Module Feature

VIC414-22 is Woodward VIC series compact digital speed controller, specially designed for single-set generator engine speed regulation. It receives magnetic pickup sensor pulse signal to detect engine real-time speed, compares actual speed with set speed and outputs drive signal to fuel actuator.

It supports isochronous and droop control modes, built-in overspeed alarm and shutdown protection function. Speed gain, stability, start fuel limit and droop parameters can be adjusted locally. Small size, easy to install on engine control box, commonly matched with Woodward electric actuators on diesel generator and gas generator units.

Working principle

Magnetic speed sensor generates frequency pulse signal proportional to engine speed and sends it to controller. The internal CPU compares measured speed with speed setpoint, calculates adjustment quantity through PID algorithm, and outputs drive signal to control fuel actuator position.

When speed exceeds overspeed threshold, the controller immediately cuts off drive output and triggers shutdown interlock to protect engine. It continuously monitors speed signal, power supply and internal hardware status during operation.

Onboard components

Main control DSP board, speed signal conditioning circuit, actuator drive power stage, parameter storage chip, terminal block for power, speed sensor and actuator wiring.

LED indicators

Front LEDs for power, speed signal, actuator drive and fault overspeed alarm.

Hardware self‑diagnosis

Self-diagnosis covers speed signal loss, power undervoltage, actuator drive overcurrent and internal hardware error. Fault status is latched and can be checked by indicator.

Programming software

Woodward control configuration software for parameter backup, PID tuning and firmware upgrade; local potentiometer for simple on-site adjustment.

Installation

Install in dry vibration-damped control cabinet. Connect 24V DC power, magnetic pickup speed sensor cable and actuator drive wiring.

Set rated speed, droop, gain and overspeed threshold according to engine requirement. Test start response and overspeed shutdown function before commissioning. Shielded cable is recommended for speed sensor wiring to avoid interference.

Diagnostic

Engine speed unstable: Speed sensor signal weak, gain set too high or sensor cable interference.

No speed tracking: Speed sensor damage, wiring open circuit or sensor air gap too large.

No actuator output: Drive circuit fault, actuator coil open circuit or power loss.
